You deserve a summer of love—not a summer of injury! So you can relax celebrating the magic of summer—from fireflies and fireworks to bare feet and blueberries—here’s a list of little-known summertime dangers:
To be clear, sunburns are NOT a surprising hazard. Everyone knows that the sun is your biggest enemy, responsible for causing 90 percent of your skin’s aging and more than doubling your skin cancer risk. The real surprise here is that sunburns aren’t just bad for your skin. They actually increase your risk for dehydration and make it harder for your body to cool down, upping your risk for heat stroke. In case you get sunburned, be sure to take shelter from the heat and hydrate with plenty of water!
Wire grill-cleaning brushes
Grilling is the quintessential summertime sport. Who doesn’t drool over a fire-grilled burger or juicy steak? Just be careful how you prepare and clean the grill before cooking your meal. Between 2002 and 2014, an estimated 1,700 Americans went to the emergency room because they had a piece of wire bristle from the grill cleaning brush lodged in their throats, as reported in Today’s Parent. Instead of a wire bristle brush, use a wooden scraper or a natural bristle brush—any debris from which will burn off during cooking and not get trapped in your food.
Spray sunscreen and bug repellent
Those spray bottles sure do make the application process a breeze—just be careful to not INHALE the spray while you’re applying it! Your best bet is to spray the product first into your palm and then use your hand to spread the product where you want it. Spraying into your hand first will limit the amount of product that becomes airborne, reducing your risk for inhaling any toxic chemicals or irritating ingredients.
Overheated garden hoses
Few things seem more harmless than a garden hose. But if your hose has been idle in the hot sun, the water inside the hose can heat to a scalding temperature. Before aiming your hose at an unsuspecting victim, take a few moments to let the hot water drain and the cool water to take over.
